What is the Stock Exchange Daily Official List (SEDOL)?
The Stock Exchange Daily Official List code is a unique identifier generated by the London Stock Exchange for securities issued in the U.K.
How Does the Stock Exchange Daily Official List (SEDOL) Work?
Each U.K.-issued security traded on the London Stock Exchange is assigned a distinct code which identifies it on the Stock Exchange Daily Official List (SEDOL). This SEDOL identifier is seven characters in length and comprises a combination of letters and numbers.
Why Does the Stock Exchange Daily Official List (SEDOL) Matter?
U.K. securities contain SEDOL codes for greater ease and reduced confusion in trading and trade processing. In addition to other identifiers, including CUSIP and ISIN numbers, the existence of a SEDOL code identifies U.K. securities which do not trade on a foreign exchange (e.g. the NYSE).
