40 Banks Give Away Free Gas This Week -- Is Yours One Of Them?

While credit unions and big banks take turns revving up and scaling back on consumer fees, a crop of community banks is giving people what they really need -- a break at the tank.

[InvestingAnswers Feature: How to Profit from Rising Gas Prices]

For two hours this Wednesday and Thursday (August 15 and 16), 40 community banks will be doling out $80,000 worth of free gas in 20 cities across the nation, according to a statement released by Kasasa, a national brand of free checking and savings accounts.

Here's the fine print:

  • $20 in free gas will be given to the first 200 cars at each location
  • Drivers do not have to be accountholders at the participating banks to cash in on the freebies
  • The promotions run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. only.
