Chartered Investment Counselor (CIC)

What it is:

A Chartered Investment Counselor (CIC) is an individual certified by the Investment Counsel Association. The certification is available to CFA holders who are currently registered as investment advisors.

How it works (Example):

Those who hold a CIC certification have a high level of expertise in portfolio management.  A CIC is an investment advisor who has at least five years of experience, holds a chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation and has passed a series of examinations. The CIC designation is awarded by the Investment Counsel Association (ICA) once the candidate has been employed as a member of the Investment Counsel Association of America (ICAA) and passed examinations that reflect proficiency in such subjects as economic theory, portfolio management and analysis, taxation and accounting rules.

Why it Matters:

An investment advisor who bears a CIC designation has been sanctioned and vouched for by the ICA as an effective, knowledgeable, and dependable resource for investment and financial planning. Individuals who hold a CIC designation are held to a higher set of ethical standards.
